BIo 3.3.2- Summarize how transgenic organisms are engineered to benefit society
Transgenic organisms can help benefit our society in many ways. They offer deeper understanding of the genetic component in disease and possible diagnosis; cheaper and more easily produced drugs; and crops that could help reduce the ever growing problem of world hunger. Some people, however, still don't believe the fact that genetically modified organisms are created for mankind's benefit. Those people believe that these types of manipulations are unethical.

Transgenic Animals
Transgenic animals were developed to produce proteins which would be used in creating pharmaceutical drugs for treating human disease. An example of a transgenic animal is the pig. Transgenic pigs produce human hemoglobin, which is very important for transporting oxygen through our bodies.

Transgenic Plants
Many plants have been genetically modified for agricultural use. Some crops have been made to be herbicide resistant and some can even produce an insect killing toxin. These plants have been modified so farmers can have greater crop yields every year. Another reason plants have been modified is to produce pharmaceuticals cheaper than factory made drugs. Modified bananas and potatoes have vaccines for protection against diarrheal diseases such as cholera.
