This book is both very touching and related to biology in many ways! The story follows the main character, Hazel Grace, through her tough journey battling cancer and falling in love. In the beginning of this story you will read about all the people at her Support Group and get an understanding of the cancer that Hazel has and her peers as well. Throughout this book you see various genetic disorders and how the effect people, her friend Issac has cancer in his eyes and to prevent it from spreading he had to get them cut out. Augustus Waters had cancer in his leg and again to keep it from spreading or so he thought he got it removed.
When Hazel first meet Augustus she just know there is something about him that she likes. They began to speak in Support Group and after too! This is just the begging though Augustus also begin to like her. Their love begins to grow and although they are very different they seem to work perfectly. Hazel has a cancer mutation that causes her to have trouble breathing and her lungs tend to fill up with liquid. Sometimes her oxygen tank and BIB-PA is n't enough. In the story she wakes up in the middle of the night and couldn't breath so she went straight to ICU. She refused to let Augustus she her while she was in the ICU, she felt as if she was a grenade and that she did not want to hurt anyone she didn't have to. So she attempts to keep her distance from him.
As she attempted to keep her distance Augustus refused! She has Always loved the book
An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten and she had just recently gave the book to Augustus and it has given him a reason to talk to her. However for some reason the book just stops mid-sentence and Hazel has been curious about this boo since she first read it. There is a program called Genius Wish Granting Factory, when Hazel was younger she wasted her one wish in Disney World. However Augustus has not wasted his, he find out that Van Houten lives in Amsterdam and that is what he plans to use his wish on. When he has finalized this Hazel had to go through somethings to be sure that she will be safe and well taken care of while she is over there, then Augustus, Hazel, and Hazel's mom leave to go! The first night that they were in Amsterdam August and Hazel go out to dinner at this really fancy diner on the canal. Here he confess his love for Hazel and no matter what she does he will always love her. The next day they visit Van Houten to get some answer about this book . When they arrive they found him drunk and his assistant tells them how he is always this way. When they begin to ask his question about they book he turns out to be a total jerk and tells Hazel basically that she just need to die already and she gets up and starts yelling in his face but he doesn't care he just keeps telling her how worth less she is and eventually Augustus gets her away and out of the house. Later that day they went to the Anne Frank house, here Hazel an Augustus have their first kiss! She describes it as magical and everything she every wanted. The next day, their last day in Amsterdam, Hazels mom said she will leave them alone so they can talk and this confuses Hazel. So her and August go back to the hotel and then to the room where they both sit and he tells her that his cancer is back. When he tells her this is completely tears her apart!
When they return back home they still are together but Augustus continues to get sicker and sicker. Hazel is still always there for him but it like he's gone. One day he has her come to the gas station where he was and she came to find him in horrible condition, vomit all over him. She calls 911 and they take him to the hospital where his mom and sisters arrive and she is no longer aloud back to see him. When he gets out he soon gets admitted yet again and little does he know but this will be the last time he is in the hospital. When Hazel had the feeling that he was gone his mom soon called at 3:01 A.M. and tell Hazel the news she nearly dies inside. Soon is the funeral and she is asked to speak and she gets up there and says the things that shes thinks the people want to hear and she is right. When she soon goes over to Issac's to hang out he tells Hazel that he had been writing her something. She soon figures out that he has mailed it to Van Houten asking him to write Hazel an eulogy. He continues in this letter to talk about all the great things about Hazel. He tell Van Houten about the time Hazel was in the ICU how that's when he got his PET scan and found out about his cancer. He also snuk into Hazels room to see her and just sat there while holding her hand. The last paragraph he wrote said "What else? She is so beautiful. You don't get tired of looking at her. You never worry if she is smarter than you; You know she is. She is funny without ever being mean. I love her. I am so lucky to love her, Van Houten. You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world , old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she likes hers." and the story ends with her saying "I do, Augustus. I do."
This book clearly relates to genetics and evolution. specifically to bio 3.1 because in this standard you learn how someone may have cancer and where this mutation occurred, what it might it be and possibly how to cure it.
