I thought this book was very interesting because it represented a new lifestyle with very few choices. It also related to biology in several ways such as how the community got to where they were and how they genetically changed color.
It all started with an eleven year old boy named Jonas. In Jonas’s community there was no emotions because everything was controlled by the elders. The elders were a group of five peoples who controlled everything down to who you married, your life long job that you got when you turned a 12, and who you would receive as children. Jonas has a mom, a dad, and a sister. Jonas has light eyes which was very unusual in Jonas`s community. Jonas was almost a twelve so he got an assigned a job at the ceremony of twelve. The chief elder assigned him as the receiver which was a very big deal. The receiver is the only person in the community that holds memories of what life was like before. The former receiver transferred the memories to Jonas overtime. Jonas called the receiver before him the giver. The current receiver also had light eyes. Jonas’s family unit was taking care of a baby named Gabriel because he was too small for his age. If Gabriel didn`t get better he would have to be released from the community. The people that get released are given a shot that kills them. Jonas had received a set of rules since he had been selected to be receiver. He was allowed to lie down and he couldn`t discuss his training with anyone. The Giver taught him about color, hills, sex, warfare, ext. Jonas and the Giver made a plan to fake his death and run away from the community. Once Jonas left it released all of the memories into his community and there was be emotions and the people knew what it meant to make choices. Jonas ran away with Gabriel and they traveled for weeks until they found something.
